The Strategic Communications Managers (SCMs) are pivotal positions within the Communications Directorate, adv! ising Ministers and senior officials on all aspects of communications in line with the DepartmentÂ's policy and business objectives.
The Communications Directorate is looking for motivated, self starter with the confidence to: -
Initiate fresh communications thinking in the development of policy;
Drive forward the delivery of integrated communications strategies, collaborating with colleagues across policy, the communications directorate and with partners externally;
Liaise across the Department and with relevant external audiences to build and maintain effective relationships and advise policy officials on stakeholder management.
Building on a broad communications skill base, the successful candidates will be required to provide robust advice at all levels, demonstrate strong influencing skills and will be required to shape and deliver communications while also ensuring the views of stakeholders are taken into account as policy ! is developed.
Key Responsibilities:
To be ! the professional communications lead for senior management teams within policy areas, developing appropriate external and internal communications, including forward planning of communications activity on a range of issues that enhance internal, industry partner and public understanding or co-operation with the policy and delivery agenda.
To provide presentational advice on a wide range of communications issues to Senior Officials and Ministers.
To lead virtual communications teams to deliver communications - thinking creatively about opportunities to promote policy in a positive light, defining and advising on suitable channel strategies to meet the organisationÂ's overall communications objectives.
To help non-communications professionals in policy units to build communications understanding and competence to inform their policy development work and quality of advice to Ministers.
To provide internal communications support across all cha! nnels to inform and encourage participation in various corporate and directorate wide initiatives and to enhance understanding, relationships and perception.
To maintain solid working relationships with counterparts in the wider Whitehall community and across DfT so that there is co-ordination of activity and consistency of messages.
To be a member of programme project boards as required - in each case responsible for identifying communications issues and risks and ensuring they are discussed and understood and that messages are consistent with the wider DepartmentÂ's corporate objectives and strategy.
Experience of working with Ministers e.g. in private office or press office is desirable
